Frequently Asked Questions

Where does this data come from?

Population estimates are from the United Nations World Population Prospects, the most authoritative source for global demographic data. We use mid-year estimates and linear interpolation for specific dates.

How fast is the world population growing?

The world adds about 70-80 million people per year, though the growth rate is slowing. Peak growth was in the late 1960s at 2.1% per year; it's now around 0.9% and projected to decline further.

When will population reach 10 billion?

UN projections estimate the world will reach 10 billion around 2058, with population potentially peaking around 10.4 billion in the 2080s before declining.

What about dates before 1950?

This calculator uses UN data from 1950 onward. For earlier dates, estimates become less reliable. Population in 1950 was about 2.5 billion; in 1900 it was about 1.6 billion.
