How We Calculate This
First-year costs include one-time purchases (wand, broom, owl) plus annual expenses. Subsequent years include tuition, supplies, books, robes, pet upkeep, and spending money. Scholarship percentage reduces tuition only. Inflation is compounded annually.

Is Hogwarts actually free in the books?
J.K. Rowling has stated that Hogwarts is funded by the Ministry of Magic and doesn't charge tuition. However, students must purchase their own supplies, books, robes, and equipment. This calculator imagines what it might cost if Hogwarts operated like a real UK boarding school.
How much is a Galleon worth in real money?
Based on Rowling's statement that a Galleon is about £5, and in-universe prices like Harry's wand costing 7 Galleons (£35), we use this conversion for our estimates. Some fans calculate different values based on gold weight.
Why is tuition so expensive?
The default tuition is based on average UK boarding school costs, which range from £20,000 to £40,000+ per year. Hogwarts includes room, board, and extensive facilities, so it would likely be at the higher end.
Do I really need a broomstick?
First-years aren't allowed their own broomsticks, but students can bring them from second year onward. If you make the Quidditch team, the school might provide one (like Harry's Nimbus 2000), so toggle it off if you're on a budget!
