How We Calculate This

Fuel cost is calculated as: (Distance ÷ MPG) × Gas Price. Round trip doubles the distance. Cost per mile = Gas Price ÷ MPG.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find my vehicle's MPG?

Check your owner's manual, the sticker on the driver's door jamb, or look up your vehicle at fueleconomy.gov. City MPG is typically lower than highway MPG.

Should I use city or highway MPG?

Use highway MPG for long interstate trips, city MPG for urban driving, or a combined/average figure for mixed driving conditions.

How can I improve my fuel efficiency?

Maintain steady speeds, avoid rapid acceleration, keep tires properly inflated, remove excess weight, use cruise control, and keep up with regular maintenance.

What about electric vehicles?

For EVs, use MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) or calculate cost using kWh/mile and your electricity rate.
